AI-driven data centers are the fastest-growing load type in the history of the U.S. power grid. But the gap between a developer's power request and a viable interconnection path has never been wider — or more consequential. This workshop brings together independent engineers, grid planners, and research institutions to move beyond the hype and into the hard questions: How do today's transmission constraints actually shape siting decisions? How are queue reform efforts changing the math? And what does frontier research tell us about where the grid needs to go to keep up? Drawing on real-world project experience across all major U.S. ISOs and RTOs, and informed by EPE's research collaborations with the Power and AI Initiative (PAI) at Harvard SEAS and the National Lab of the Rockies, this session gives developers, utilities, and planners practical frameworks for bridging the gap between data center demand and grid capacity.
